Chapter 9
I donât know how long I lied there. Five? Ten minutes? It felt like an eternity that lasted only a second. I knew it was time to go when both my internal sense of survival kicked in and I heard the Prince saying that we needed to go.
I looked down into the cage that we now stood upon and saw the demons looking back at us. Again, it was a question of stimulus. All of the action that had played out moments ago had drawn their attention and their focus had been on what was going on outside at the wharf. Now that the action had subsided, their focus shifted to the three meals standing above them.
Most of the demons on the train platform had run down the stairs and there were very few of them left. We quickly took advantage of the situation and climbed down to the platform. A few of the walkers came towards us but what really concerned me was the runner coming from the rear.
âHurry,â I hissed. âThereâs a runner.â
The Prince jumped from the fence instead of climbing down the last few feet. He toppled over, almost taking me with him, and then he stood up quickly, not bothering to check to see whether he had injured himself. Immediately he began running towards the tracks and followed them out and away from the station as they headed out over open air.
âBe careful!â his sister yelled after him as she followed his lead.
I didnât want to fight the runner among these other demons but fighting him on a suspended train track was just as scary if not more so. I hoped he would fall first or maybe that sniper would help us out again. Either way, I had to start running now and stop thinking about every possible contingency. That hadnât helped so far anyway.
I watched the Prince run out on the tracks and saw his gait change as he ventured out past the platform and he realized that every step now counted. His movements were slower, more deliberate and precise. His arms flailed out for balance and he almost danced across the dividers. The Angel followed his lead and I felt as if they were safe now.
I could hear the runner catching up to me; he would be on me in just a few seconds. I could turn and fight or run and hope. In that moment of indecision, I saw the Heroâs last stand play through my mind again. I watched him turn and fight: face his attackers, his fate, his doom, and fight on.
I donât think I actually had control over my body in that moment, because Iâm fairly certain I never would have told it to turn and fight. But thatâs exactly what I did.
I dropped the extra pack and watched it slide a few feet forward, carried by its own momentum. Then I pulled my spear from its makeshift holder on my pack. While still running forward, I swung around to face the demon, my momentum now sliding me backwards along the ground as my pack had.
